Project Infinity- Draft
When you engage yourself in an activity for pleasure, it’s called a hobby. When you have love for that activity, it’s called a passion. My passion started as just an activity, but has turned into my only passion. I started out in the tech team at church 3 years ago, as just a Sunday activity.
But after volunteering and attending church every Sunday, my love for church increased and so did my passion for church and God. Going into Junior year, also known as the most important year, I feel that I want to pursue my passion for church as a career, and become a pastor.
As a pastor, you lead and shepherd the church, along with other numerous rolls and responsibilities. For some pastors, the decision to become a pastor needs alot of convincing. Some pastors have to leave behind a good job, for example Pastor Dave Barr of New Hope Windward. When Pastor Dave was called to be a pastor, it wasn’t an overnight decison. He would have to leave his 6 figure paying job, but the desire to become a pastor tugged on his heart. It’s kind of like that scripture that says “seek and you will find.” Pastor Dave seeked for signs from God telling him that it was his calling to become a pastor. Eventually, he was convinced that it was time to surrender and become a pastor. To be a pastor, is different from many other careers. You don’t need a degree or college schooling, but what you do need is a pastoral license, but more importantly a heart for the Lord, a close relationship with God and your family, be willing to become a life long student of Christ, be willing to constantly improve, forgive everyone, and have a passion for God.
Before I started volunteering on the tech team at church, I never fully understood the hard work and time it took for a pastor, to be a pastor! Some people think that you just read the bible for a few minutes, then go up there and just speak. I learned that pastors actually have endless hours of preperation for a sermon. They spend alot of time praying, writing, and prepping. Being a leader of a church can get tiresome and drain your energy, not to mention the public speaking! Of course, after a while you get used to speaking in front of a crowd, but for some speaking can get real nerve racking. I got my first taste of the nerve racking experience when I made the decision to go to the high school ministry at my church, and encourage them to volunteer in the church community. I wrote my testimony about my experience volunteering in the church, and how it changed my life, and my relationship with God. Once I finished writing my testimony, I practiced and practiced and practiced! I prayed to God for help in encouraging my peers to volunteer in the church. When the day finally came, I was nervous and scared to go and talk to the high schoolers, but of course I went and spoke! The experience wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I know that I have alot of work to do before I can become a pastor.
Being a pastor is without a doubt, hard work! It’s like having a bunch of jobs at once. There’s always something that drives pastors to keep going though, it’s their passion for church and God. Without true, genuine passion I would make your career as a pastor harder. You have to be willing to give alot of your time and effort into your ministry. You have to have leadership, empathy, passion for church, faith in God and love for others. You have to be willing to be a brave “mighty Chrisian warrior” for God.

Pastor Dave's story-
It took God a few years to convince me, started with passions, passionate about doing church so anything about reaching people that don't know Jesus, PASSION, God given passion, I always talked about passion! Then I became interested in intern at New Hope Oahu. My wife thought I was crazy because I had a 6 figure income at my job at the time. But I had passion, a desire to become pastor, then Pastor Wayne asked him to come on staff but it took a year and a half to accept the offer. Spent year&half asking God for help. One time I was walking from the living room into kitchen and there was a movie on tv called “Jesus” walked by and Jesus on the TV said “come and follow me and i will make you fishers of men” and all of a sudden my knees buckle and I was kneeling and crying, not sad crying, just like crying out to God in a dark kitchen&didn't know what was going on..2 days later the door bell rings and a girl from small group has a fishing pole in her hand and theres a cookie cutter heart at the end of the pole and by the reel theres a scripture taped on was the same scripture as the one that played on the TV 2 days before and she said the Lord told me to give this to you…And God said follow me...
Then another time, I was at Sears to buy some pants and I went to check Sears&I walked pass a women standing by the ties and walked by her and she asked for the time yeah its 12:30, and she said "thank you and god bless you you mighty christian warrior" and had no name tag on saying I was from New Hope and I had not told her I was a Christian, so turned around and asked her how she knew I was a Christian and she said "i can see it in your eyes" and asked if I was a pastor, and I said no, but might become one&she said "yeah, God is gonna make you rich in his blessings" and she said well "i'll see you around and i'll see you on TV" and I said "wow am i gonna be on tav?" I had no intention of being on TV and about a year after I was on TV. That was one of the freakiest experience ever, and I thought she was an angel.
What kinds of preparations do you as a pastor have to do to get ready for a Sunday service?
-Plan out theme of the message weeks in advance
-About 15-22 hours of preparation for writing
-Have to discuss elements(like dances, dramas, etc.)
Massive amount of work but most people think pastors study for a little while, then just talk but no way if your gonna preach, fresh, creative, and effectively it takes hours, and you spends ALOT of time praying…ALOT OF WORK! gets draining but preparation kills and God helps
Pastor Dave's schedule:
Mondays: 8:30am-12am
Tuesday Nights- Discuss elements

They were really nice and welcoming! Brenden introduced me, he's a cool kid and then I went up and they were clapping&they said they liked the color I was wearing! Then I just spoke, but I was really really nervous..My cousin said my voice was shaky! But at the end they all clapped and I hope at least one person starts volunteering!! I still have a lot to work on before I become a pastor, but today was an awesome experience!! I'm gonna put together a video and post it later!!

My Speech!
Hi, I’m Destrie and I’m here to talk to you guys about the importance of volunteering in the church community. Without volunteers in our church, there would be no food, no set-up outside in the lobby, no stage, lights, video, or sound in the main services. There would be pretty much nothing! I’ve been a volunteering on the tech team for almost 3 years now and it has been the biggest blessing of my life! Before I started volunteering I knew God was real, but I didn’t have a realtionship with him, and in fact I almost hated going to church. But through constantly volunteering, God worked magic in my life and in my heart, and in just a couple short months. I built relationships in the church and utimatley with Him! He gave me a new ohana here at NHW. I tried harder and harder to get close to Him and His people. I found myself serving every weekend and I started to truley love Him. I saw a change in myself, I was not ashamed of my religion or of my love for God. I shared everything I learned in church with my friends and encourged them daily to start a relationship with God. I pretty much turned into one of those Jesus Freaks! I got water baptized with my whole family and now most of my family volunteers in some sort of ministry. My mom goes to WCCC services and helps there, my dad works with the lighting team every Sunday, my cousin has been working with me on both the Sunday video team and video production team, and even my 10 year old brother helps in the children’s church ministry. Now, I’m not saying that God takes care of every single problem I’ve had at the snap of a finger just because I’m serving Him, but he has made those problems easier to handle by blessing me with good Christian friends and role models, that watch out for me and help me when I need guidance. He has also shown and proved to me, that through every trial and tribulation I face, and will face, He will ALWAYS be there for me. So today I encourage all of you, GET INVOLVED! Test drvie a ministry for just 2 weeks, and if you like it, stay committed! If you serve Him, He will reveal His love for you and help you built relationships with not only Him, but with His people. He will bless you and your life. God has wired every single one of you with some sort of talent or interest, and I encourage you to take action on that talent or interest, so please get involved! Thank you and God Bless!!
Nervous!-One More Day
My presentation to the high school ministry at church is Sunday(tomorrow) and I'm so nervous!! I decided for my impact project that I'm going into the high school ministry and encourage them to start volunteering in the church. I talked to the high school ministry director and he approved me to come in and speak. I wrote my speech and I swear I've said it about 15 times. I know God will lead me, but it's only human to be scared the first time doing this kind of speaking!! I also went to the mall and got my outfit(in case you wanted to know) Well its almost 1 in the morning, so I'm going to read my speech for another 30 minutes then off to bed, and get ready to practice more tomorrow!! Wish me luck, and thanks for reading(:

Project Infinity!
Hey whoever happens to be reading this! So you have reached my "Project Infinity" Blog. What is this project? It's a "Passion Project" for our 10th grade english class, where we pick a passion, do research on it, and do an impact project on it! I picked church as my passion because over the course of 3 years, church has become pretty much my only passion. So this blog is for me to journal all my research and experiences while doing this project! Enjoy(:
